Top Tips for Painting VJ Panels

VJ panels, also known as V-groove or tongue-and-groove panels, are a popular choice for adding character and texture to walls and ceilings. But, painting them can be a bit tricky. Here are our top tips to help you get it right.

Choose the right paint

Choosing the right paint is essential for achieving a professional finish. We recommend using a high-quality, water-based acrylic paint, such as Dulux Wash&Wear. These paints are durable, easy to clean and offer excellent coverage. Remember to choose a paint colour that complements your decor and style.

Use the right tools

Using the right tools can make a huge difference in achieving a flawless finish. For VJ panels, we recommend using a small roller, such as the Maverick Mini Fabric Roller Cover range, and a good quality brush, such as the Monarch Advance Sash Cutter range. A roller will help you cover large areas quickly, while a brush is perfect for cutting in and reaching tight spots.

Apply the paint correctly

When applying the paint, start by cutting in around the edges and corners with a brush. This also includes between the grooves. Only paint a couple at a time so you can roll over them while the paint is still wet. This will help you avoid dried paint lines in the middle of your boards. Be sure to apply the paint evenly and avoid leaving any drips or roller marks. It's better to apply two thin coats than one thick coat.

Allow the paint to dry

Once you have finished painting, allow the paint to dry completely before touching or recoating. It's recommended to wait at least 2 hours between coats, and 24 hours before using the room.
