Preparation
Preparing the surface appropriately before you start painting will allow the coating to apply much more even and smooth. There are plenty of different ways to prepare your timber based on its condition.
If you have new bare timber you’ll need to draw out tannins and oils from the fresh surface. To do this, use Intergrain UltraPrep Tannin and Oil Remover on damp timber and scrub. Follow up with Cabot’s Deck Clean following the guidelines on the bottle. Allow the timber to completely dry before coating.
If you have previously painted or varnished timber you’ll need to either use a paint stripper or sand to remove the previous coatings followed by Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner using the bottle’s instructions.
If you have previously stained and oiled timber use Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner following the instructions on the bottle.
Handy TIP: Use the ‘water test’ to see if your surface is ready to be coated. Drop some water onto the timber and look for water soaking into the timber, that’s how you know it’s ready to be coated. If you drop some water onto the surface and it forms beads on the surface, more sanding is required.
If you have weathered, grey timber you’ll need to remove the grey fibres by sanding and fill any cracks with filler. Dust away all dirt and dust and follow with Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner according to the instructions on the label.
Application
Ensure you stir Intergrain UltraDeck Timber Stain very well before and while using. This will prevent any application marks left on the finish when it dries. Grab a brush and apply generously to the timber including the end grain and any exposed edges. Wipe the brush off well and smooth out any drips. Don’t worry if the stain appears milky on application, it will dry to a semi-transparent finish.
Dry time
The coating will need about 2 hours to dry before a second coat can be applied using the same steps as above.
